Drop, Cover & Hold On: Limited Mobility

Pre-Dawn Quakes Near Population Center

Earth tremors were felt, pre-dawn, on February 15th in Salt Lake and Utah valleys.  While this is not unusual – quakes of this magnitude happen several times each year -- these tremors occurred along the Wasatch Fault, close to population centers.

Please, take these events as a prompt, a reminder to move forward on 96-hour emergency kit preparation for your family.

Additionally, PLEASE, at your earliest opportunity, gather your family and practice DROP, COVER and HOLD-ON in each room of your home.  It is done this way:  DROP carefully to the floor, crawl to a desk or table and take COVER under it.  HOLD-ON to the desk/table to prevent it from shifting, leaving you exposed to falling debris.

If you have no access to a strong table or desk, DROP carefully to the floor, crawl quickly to the nearest interior wall -- away from windows. Sit up against the wall, pull your knees into your chest, tuck you head in toward your chest and over your head with your bent arms.

If there are no tables, desks or safe interior walls, crawl to a closet if there is one.

If you can do nothing more, DROP to the floor and curl up and protect your head.

If you use a cane, DROP carefully to the floor, crawl to the COVER of a table, desk and HOLD-ON.  Or crawl to the nearest interior wall and follow those steps as above.

If you use a seat-walker, LOCK the brake, sit down, bend forward and down toward your lap and HOLD-ON to your walker.

If you are in a wheelchair, LOCK the brake and bend forward and down toward your lap and HOLD-ON to your wheelchair.

Teach the children in your life these life-saving actions and practice them a time or two each year.
