YOU are the HELP

Who will Help?

In a major disaster YOU (and I) are the HELP ‘til aid arrives …and that could take at least 96 hours.

Are you prepared to meet your essential needs for 4 days and 4 nights?

That would include: Toileting; 4 gallons of safe drinking water per person; first aid; your essential meds; food; hygiene supplies comfort items.  Does your kit include cash (small bills); house and auto keys; copies of your Identification; a contact list; and your important papers?

What about a portable radio, flash light & batteries?  A tarp for shelter?  Have you thought about your pets?  They will need a carrier, leash, their meds, food they are used to and sufficient water.

(See blog articles for detailed information about 96 Hour Kits.)

Are you prepared to help your neighbors?  Remember: You are their HELP too until aid arrives.   And they are your HELP.  Another good reason to build warm relationships with your neighbors.

We seniors are a valuable resource following disaster:

1.We have life experience that gives us wisdom that younger people may not have yet acquired.  This life know-how is precious in dealing with emergencies,

2.Who is more experienced in helping others than seniors?  Following a disaster, many will need comfort and reassurance.  Who better to give it than seasoned adults?

3.Perhaps you have specialized training?  Medical or basic first aid?  CERT (Community Emergency Response Team)? Amateur radio?

4.In periods of response and recovery, volunteer efforts also require a great deal of accurate paperwork.  Good records help a community receive federal dollars.

If you have prepared to meet your needs, you are then more able to offer assistance to others.
